I just bought my license of Elementor Pro and reinstalled WordPress and out of nowhere this message shows up. Is it a scam? Simple answer is not. It is an authorization error and it is easy to fix.
When you activate Elementor Pro’s license in your site, the plugin communicates with Elementor’s servers to confirm that you have a valid active license. The authorization process has changed through the years, before you only needed a serial key which you could copy to your site (you can still see this key at my.elementor.com but it is useless).
The way Elementor Pro’s activation now works is through an OAuth process similar to when you sign up or in to a website using Facebook or Google without using your password for the site but the account on FB or Google’s services. This way you don’t have to share your credentials (neither does it make it easier to resell it, don’t be those guys).
The side effect of this new approach is that if you didn’t deauthorize your site manually from the WordPress Dashboard or from my.elementor.com before on your Personal or Plus plan (or whatever the plans are called now) the license will show as invalid because “You have exceeded your limitation” since the server will believe you are using your license in more sites than you purchase for originally.
To fix it log in to my.elementor.com with your account, in the site lists look for yours or one you are no longer using that has the label Pro.
Clicking on the 3 dots of the top right corner select the option View related subscription.
This will take you to the plan that has that site authorized and at the bottom of that page search the site’s URL and remove it from the list.
After this try again to Connect & Activate your license as normal.
Why is all this necessary if it is the same URL? Because the local authorization token has changed and because URLs can be easily spoofed in a computer by modifying the Hosts file. Elementor does not like people using the license in more places than they originally bought it for. It would be like buying a plane ticket and then expecting it to be good to bring the whole family to the trip.
